Foundations of National Board Certification & Ethical Support
Purpose: Build a strong understanding of the National Board process and the ethical boundaries of candidate support.

  • The role of a Candidate Support Provider (CSP) 
  • NBPTS Policy Guidelines for Ethical Candidate Support (feedback vs. editing, guidance vs. direction) 
  • Creating a Supportive Learning Environment
Coaching Skills for Adult Learners 
Purpose: Strengthen facilitation and coaching skills to promote candidate analysis and reflection. 
  • Principles of adult learning and how this “looks” in CSP practice 
  • Coaching vs. mentoring vs. consulting 
  • Questioning techniques that promote analysis and reflection 
  • Building trust, Creating a Safe Learning Space  
  • Supporting Candidates who feel overwhelmed, unfocused, discouraged 
Providing Effective, Ethical Feedback 
Purpose: Equip Candidate Support Providers to give insightful feedback without crossing ethical boundaries. 
  • Characteristics of feedback (specific, standards-based, reflective) that refines and clarifies candidate’s thinking 
  • Distinguishing feedback from editing or rewriting 
  • Using rubrics, standards, and guiding questions 
  • Supporting written commentary, video analysis, and student work samples 
Supporting Candidates Through the Certification Journey
Purpose: Prepare Candidate Support Providers to support candidates holistically—from planning to submission. 
  • Supporting Session Planning, goal setting, pacing, and time management 
  • Addressing candidate stress, self-doubt, and perfectionism 
  • Differentiating support for first-time, retake, and maintenance candidates 
  • Preparing candidates for submission and reflection post-submission
